Celebrating our 80th Anniversary Year - 2002/2003
Our Mission, and Links
The Anglican Church of the Resurrection, Bucharest, is first and foremost a place of prayer and celebration of the incarnate Word of God, known and glorified in sacramental communion and eucharistic living, witnessing to the redemptive grace of Christ.
At the individual level, it is a place where people from very varied cultures and walks of life meet, make new friends, and gain a sense of new vision and direction. Through the worship and social life of the church, spiritual sustenance and support are found, and good times shared.
At the level of the wider church, our recognised presence in Bucharest contributes to ecumenical awareness and dialogue. Not only do we welcome Anglicans from different 'traditions' within the worldwide Anglican communion, we also welcome Christians of other denominations (e.g. Lutheran, Presbyterian, Methodist) who seek here a place of worship and deepening of faith.
We also have a community role. Romania is a country of great natural resources and rich tradition, yet through the political trauma and complexity of its history it still struggles with problems of poverty and developing infrastructure. As a church long established in Bucharest yet still representative of "the West", we are in a unique position of 'interface' between the diplomatic, business, and NGO (non-governmental organisation) worlds and the everyday life - privileged and underprivileged - of the society in which we are guests.
Our services are in English, yet, we try to ensure that those whose first language is not English will also feel at home. Standing clearly in the Anglican tradition, we are privileged to be part of a wider spectrum - having a particular link with the Romanian Orthodox Church (the Chaplain being the Archbishop of Canterbury's representative, or 'apokrisarios', to the Orthodox Patriarch). Our church building is also used for worship by the International Baptist Church, whose Sunday service starts at 12.15.

In seeking to fulfil the "great commission" of Christian discipleship (Matthew 28.18-20), we observe Christ's affirmation of the way to eternal life - "love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your strength, and with all your mind; and your neighbour as yourself" (Luke 10.25-28).
The Church of the Resurrection does not itself have charitable funds, although it is currently seeking to increase its charitable giving as part of its overall development vision. Nevertheless visitors and regular members of the congregation contribute, both as individuals and through their work, to meeting some of the needs of which we are aware.
Gifts in cash and kind are passed on through our local Orthodox parish churches. We enjoy good relations with our Orthodox neighbours - Biserica Icoanei (Church of the Icon) and Biserica Adormirii Maicii Domnului (Church of the Dormition). Through these local parish churches we are able to make donations to the needy in this area - old people especially are often extremely poor and vulnerable in present day Romania.
