From Metro ("Underground" or "Subway")
Bucharest has an excellent underground system named "Metrou". By its use, you can easily reach our church from any location in the city. Just follow the directions for "Piata Romana". Exit the train at that station. There are two exits from Piata Romana station, one facing north and the other facing south. When you reach the top of the exit stairway, look for a statue located on a large circular "Piata" (plaza). If you see this, you are facing north. Turn 180 degrees and walk in the opposite direction (south) from the large Plaza. If however, you see KFC directly to your left, McDonald's restaurant directly ahead, you are facing south, and must simply walk straight ahead. Either way, continue on the left side of that avenue (Blvd. Magheru), and within 150 meters you will see a cinema on the corner, with large silver columns (see "b" on map). Turn left just before the cinema and continue down that street (named "Verona"). After approximately 90 meters and you will see the church appear before you (exactly in the angle of view/perspective seen on this page). From Hotel Lido: Exiting the main entry of the Hotel Lido, turn left, and walk 140 meters along Blvd. Magheru. When you see a "Honda" store on your left (see "a" on map), turn on the next street to the right. There is a cinema on the corner, with large silver columns (see "b" on map). Continue down that street (named "Verona"). After approximately 90 meters and you will see the church appear before you (exactly in the angle of view/perspective seen on this page). From Hotel Intercontinental: Exiting the main entry of the Hotel Intercontinental (with the circular drive before you)turn right, walk 10 meters to the sidewalk, turn right again and walk (north) approximately 180 meters along Blvd. From Athenee Palace Hilton Hotel: Exiting the main entry of the Hotel (with the "Atheneum Symphony Hall" and its garden facing you) turn left, walk and walk east to the next main intersection. Then turn left (north) onto Blvd. Magheru (which changes name to Balcescu, in the opposite direction). By Taxi:This last set of directions can be quite fun! Even if it is your first day in Romania, the following phonetic phrase will allow you to get into a taxi cab, and tell the driver precisely where to take you, in perfect Romanian! Just rehearse the phrase, exactly as it is spelled here (or take a printed version with you to read from). The taxi driver will think you are Romanian! This has been tested extensively. A few instructions: The comma represents the end of a word so you should pause briefly (and only) at each comma. The bold-faced phonetics represent stress points, or accents, so elevate the amplitude slightly at each bold syllable. If you add the stress properly, you will be speaking in perfect Romanian! in ter sect see ya, strah duh, zee no pole, she, vay rone a, ah pro ap eh, day, gra deen a, ee kwah nay, vah rogue. Essentially, this phrase tells the driver this: "Take me to the intersection of Xenopol and Verona, near the Gradina Icoanei park, please" (most taxis would not be familiar with the church, by its name, so this graphic description is best). If you have a Macintosh, write the webmaster (danasaur@schloss.ro) and we will send you a script that will allow your Powerbook (only) to give the driver instructions, "verbally" using Apple's Advanced Speech Recognition. For a simpler script, for Apple "Text to Speech" (which is built in to all Macs), click here to download now! Last, a word of caution: When you choose a taxi, look for one that has a company name and telephone number on the door, and a price per-kilometer on the windshield. These are state-licensed taxis, and will not overcharge you. Some known companies that are safe to use are: Meridian (tel. 9444, 9888), Taxi AS, Cobalcescu (tel. 9451), Taxi 2000, and Prof Taxi. Avoid any taxi that says "Ro-Dana", they rarely charge by the meter, and have a reputation for taking advantage of tourists. Drum Bun! (phonetic, "droom boon", meaning "have a safe trip")
